How to Play Acrosticism
How to Play Acrosticism
The idea
Acrosticism is a backronym party game for 3 to 7 players. Turn the letters on a Word Card into a phrase that fits a Theme Card. Creativity matters more than vocabulary.
What is included
- 126 Word Cards
- 53 Theme Cards
- Official Acrosticism Rulebook
- 2 minute sand timer
- Quick Start Guide Card (included with the Theme Cards)
Setup
Place the Theme Cards face down where all players can reach them. The person who brought the game is the dealer. Deal 2 to 6 Word Cards to all players, depending on the number of players and how many rotations you plan to play. Set aside the other Word Cards. The player to the left of the dealer is the first judge.
How a turn works
-
The judge flips a Theme Card. Themes include prompts such as "terrible name for a new perfume" or "motto for surviving a bad Monday."
-
Everyone else acrosticizes. Players turn their Word Cards into backronyms that fit the theme. Each letter becomes the start of a new word, and players have 2 minutes.
-
The judge chooses a winner. The judge picks their favorite entry based on creativity, humor, or how well it fits the theme. That entry wins the Theme Card.
-
Pass the judge. The next player in clockwise rotation becomes the judge.
-
Keep playing. Gameplay continues until all players have been judge once per rotation
How to win
The player with the most Theme Cards at the end of the game wins. Ties are not disputed, but celebrated. Unless a Chaotic Remix is involved that says otherwise.
Players and time
Acrosticism is for 3 to 7 players. Everyone acrosticizes simultaneously, and each judge's turn stays tight at roughly 5 minutes. A single rotation takes about 15 minutes for 3 players and can scale up to about 45 minutes for 7. Larger groups will naturally take longer to complete a rotation. One game can be one to three full rotations before the Word Cards need to be replenished, so, before setup, decide how many rotations you want to play. Your hand is dealt to last exactly that long, so you'll run out of Word Cards right as the game ends.
Chaotic Remixes
Chaotic Remixes are optional variant rule cards that change how the game plays. When a Chaotic Remix is in play, its rules override the standard rules above. Some remixes allow players to play multiple Word Cards in a single turn, others affect the judge's behavior or what to do in the event of a tie. So if one is active, manage your hand wisely, because every Word Card you play is discarded at the end of each turn.
See the Chaotic Remixes for full rules.
